Stories about Film

Eastern China

Eastern China

Before I headed inland to Xinjiang I spent about a month in Eastern China.  I didn’t have a lot of film so I shot sparingly and without much clear direction.

The trip through the desert of northern Sudan is slow and dusty with a few stops at small villages.

Exploring Sudan

Most of the news from Sudan is about the outlying provinces, Darfur, and the south, but the new Sudan can be seen in Khartoum. I traveled to Sudan for two months, making connections and exploring the story of Chinese money and influence in the country. In the end I felt those photos weren’t strong enough [...]

WKU’s Architecture

WKU’s Architecture

While digging through my archives I pulled out this old set of photos for a yearbook assignment. What you will see are photos from around the Western Kentucky University campus.  This was the first time I used a tilt-shift lens checked out from our trusty photo department checkout.  And a thanks to Melanie Blanding for [...]

What would a foreigner think if they saw one of our parades?

What would a foreigner think if they saw one of our parades?

Disposable cameras were buy-one-get-one-free at Publix

This is the first of three posts that I shot around South Florida on a disposable camera. Before I shot this photo I had pre-visualised those branches, I just remembered that it came from Christian Hansen’s “We stopped at perfect days” essay. I bought the high-end Kodak HD with flash. Each came with 27 pictures [...]

Moonlighting as a Wedding Photographer

Moonlighting as a Wedding Photographer

I’ll think of something to say about it soon enough. For now I just want to share these photos that I shot last month with Ed at The Breakers in West Palm Beach a few weeks ago. These were all shot on my Leica M6 with an older 35/1.4 lens and some Tri-X film. Now [...]

Subtle Food Photography. Does it work?

Subtle Food Photography. Does it work?

Anyone that has seen my twitter account has probably seen this picture already, but I finally got the film scanned in New York. This is one of those times that I put a lot of effort and ideas into an image and it comes out just as I envision it, but everyone I’ve shown it [...]

Key West Portrait

Key West Portrait

The first portrait was of a couple from France, I’m going to have to return and shoot a bunch more like this.= of the kitsch in the Florida Keys. I forgot the restaurant but it was on Deer Island Key, but there were dollar bills plastered around the walls and light that just sung. There [...]
