Pfc. Robert J. Settle, 25, of Owensboro, Ky., died in Taji, Iraq, on April 19, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.
Settle, who grew up in McLean County but moved to Owensboro before joining the military in May 2004, died April 19. The Department of Defense said Settle was killed while patrolling in a Humvee near Taji.
Settle served in Iraq for five months and was assigned to the 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division from Fort Hood, Texas. He was two weeks away from returning home on furlough when he was killed.
Settle’s survivors include a 5-year-old daughter.
