6/9/10 – Cairo, Egypt – Hanna’s rooftop is his garden and testbed for inventions. He plans on adding a room and trying to run it completely off the grid with his renewable energy inventions.

Hanna Fathy grew up in the Garbage City at the Mokattam Mountain in Mansheyat Nasr, the biggest garbage city in the world. For 4 years he has been working on environmental projects building solar heaters and biogas systems out of recycled and used local materials from his area in collaboration with urban planner Thomas Culhin from California.

They spent long hours building solar heaters and perfecting the so-called biogas digester, an invention that converts organic waste into energy and placed them in the households of the predominantly Coptic Christian garbage area and the historic Muslim area.

In the past their livestock took care of the organic waste but since the killing of 100 percent of the pigs in our community last year the garbage community has struggled to find a different way to recycle Cairo’s enormous bio-waste.
